    The Value of Life

    July 22, 2015 /

By Holly Scheer Life issues are at the forefront right now. With pending elections, videos telling us incredibly disturbing news, wars and murders… we think of life. And the end of life. Our lives are not valuable because of what we do, what we contribute, what our potential is. The best of us isn’t more dear to our Lord than the least– and that’s something that can be hard for us to remember. Our beauty as humans, our worth as people– it’s not tied to what we can offer others, but to what has been offered to us. You, me, babies, the elderly… all of us are created in the…

The Delicate Art of the Perfect Church Outfit

    July 16, 2015 /

By Holly Scheer Picking an outfit that is just right for church can be complicated. Or not. Here at the Sisters of Katie Luther, we’ve got your back and our authors have worked long and hard (and made mistakes so you don’t have to) to help you pick out something just right. * In no particular order, here are our best tips to reduce stress when planning out what to wear.     Same way I pick work clothes–it’s clean and isn’t jeans or shorts I make sure my shoes allow me to sprint after my toddler when he runs off (again) How hard will it be to receive the…

    Fear Not the Foe

    July 13, 2015 /

By Holly Scheer 0 little flock, fear not the Foe Who madly seeks your overthrow; Dread not his rage and power. What though your courage sometimes faints, His seeming triumph o’er God’s saints Lasts but a little hour. Death is coming for us all. Unless the Second Coming arrives before the end of our days– we will all die. That little baby sleeping sweetly in your arms, your grandparent, your spouse, you, me– all of us. Death is coming closer daily. But Death is not the end, sister. Death is an end, but it is the end of our suffering and separation from God. Death has been overcome by Jesus–…

    Birth Fears

    July 7, 2015 /

By Holly Scheer Having a new baby is exciting. Announcing to friends, to family, to the congregation, that a new little person will be joining the family is a joy. With this joy there can be fear, though. Fear of the unknown for the first time mother, fears of the somewhat known for the mother who has been there, done that, especially if things were really hard. This fear isn’t a new one, sister. Childbirth through history has been a dangerous undertaking for women– and their babies. In some parts of the world, it still is. You aren’t alone in this, either. God has promised to never forsake and leave…

    The Sisters of Katie Luther

    July 6, 2015 /

This blog kicked off on February 20, 2015. In that time the Facebook page has grown over 1,000 likes, we’ve had some tough discussions and disagreements, and a whole lot of coming together to grow as Lutherans. Thank you. Thank you to everyone who has contributed, commented (even comments that disagree), and shared our posts. To everyone who writes and shares their thoughts and hopes, their struggles and encouragement. Thank you for helping us grow as Lutherans. Sisters (and you brothers who pop in), I’m so happy that although most of us will never meet face to face, the Internet has allowed us to find community and a place to…

    How I Pray

    June 23, 2015 /

By Holly Scheer My prayer life has changed as my life has changed. When I was younger, the main prayers I can remember saying were the ones at bedtimes and meal times. The bedtime prayer I grew up with is the one I have taught my own children, “Now I lay me down to rest/ Angels guard my little nest/ Like the wee birds in the trees/ Heavenly Father please care for me/ Amen.” We’ve also taught our children Luther’s Evening prayer and they pray that before going to sleep. The older I get, the more prayer has become intertwined to my daily life. We pray before we eat, we…

    Father’s Day for Christians

    June 22, 2015 /

By Holly Scheer The history of Father’s Day is interesting. Until this year, I’d never really sat and looked up when and why it started. From what I’ve read, there was an isolated Father’s Day celebration in 1908, but the holiday really formed in 1910, started by a woman to honor her father who as a single parent raised six children. It was held on a Sunday, the date chosen by when the pastor could get his sermons written. You can read more about it here. Father’s Day can be tricky for the reasons outlined by the incredible Sister’s post we featured on Mother’s Day. “Growing up I dreaded…

    Interview With an Adult Convert

    June 12, 2015 /

By Holly Scheer   Vanessa Rasanen is a regular writer here at Sisters of Katie Luther and was kind enough to let me interview her about her experiences growing up as an athiest and coming to Lutheranism (and Christianity, in general) as an adult. Grab a cup of coffee and read along as Vanessa tells us about her experiences. How old were you when you became a Lutheran? 22 is when I became a christian. I didn’t really learn what Lutheranism was until I was 30 and became a member at our current LCMS church.   What kind of religious life was in your family growing up? I vaguely remember…

    Gossip

    June 1, 2015 /

By Holly Scheer For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases. Proberbs 26:20 This last week has been a hard one in the news for the church. We’ve come uncomfortably up close with the knowledge that people sin– people sin in ways that hurt those around them and themselves. And with the sins and actions of others comes the opportunity to speak words that worsen the situation. There is a saying by Ouida that, “A cruel story runs on wheels, and every hand oils the wheels as they run.” How often have we seen the rapid spread of bad news, especially in…

Katie’s Bookshelf– Searching for Sunday by Rachel Held Evans Review

    May 21, 2015 /

Welcome back to Katie’s Bookshelf! Life’s busy, really too busy to waste time on bad books, and The Sisters of Katie Luther are here to help! Feel free to eavesdrop on Sandra Ostapowich, Holly Scheer, and Ellie Corrow, as they use technology available to regularly e-chat about books we’ve chosen to read and discuss together. These reviews are informal, probably slightly snarky, but always informative, and designed to help you determine what is worth your consideration. Pull up a chair, a cup of tea, or something else, if you prefer, and help yourself to our conclusions, as we explore what is on offer. Our book this time is the new…
